The Design Guild Mark Award by ercol

by Marcia on April 27, 2017

Design Guild Mark

The prestigious Design Guild Mark Award, introduced by the Furniture Makers Company, is a great accolade for any furniture designer.  It is awarded to designers working in Britain or British designers working abroad, acknowledging the best qualities in furniture design and furniture making for volume production. In recent years ercol has been very proud of its success in attaining the Design Guild Mark for many of our products.

In 2014 the Romana large sideboard designed by Dylan Freeth was presented with this well respected award and a year later in 2015 the Svelto stacking stool designed by Lisa Gould-Sandall was also awarded this accolade.

Romana collection

The Romana collection is beautifully crafted in pale oak and finished in a clear matt lacquer; it exudes the warmth that only real wood can bring.  The Romana large sideboard symbolises the quality, design and craftsmanship which have become synonymous with the ercol brand.   The large sideboard provides lots of storage space, housing three drawers and two cupboard spaces.  Dylan Freeth, from the ercol Design studio, saw it as a priority to ensure that the design has a strong tactile element with simple flowing lines to the range.

Svelto stacking stool

The Svelto stacking stool is made from oak and finished in a matt lacquer showing the beauty of the natural timber.  The product is recognisably ercol in terms of its craftsmanship and softness of detail, it is made from only 3 component parts, and all the leg assemblies are common, meeting at the centre of the stool in a specifically designed joint therefore ensuring the products we produce are done so as efficiently as possible, without compromising on the elegance of the design.

We are now proud to announce that the Furniture Makers’ Company Design Guild Mark 2016 for excellence in furniture design has been awarded again to our in-house designer Dylan Freeth for the ercol Marino Chair and Sofa, and also to Japanese designer Tomoko Azumi for the ercol Flow Chair.

Dylan Freeth who has been part of the ercol design studio since 2011 has designed many popular pieces of furniture and has been inspired by values of creating elegant, engaging furniture with great attention to detail which are values shared by ercol.

The occasional Marino Chair is hand-crafted from steam-bent solid ash using traditional craftsmanship and also modern furniture making techniques to create a considered and contemporary design that reflects ercol’s design heritage of chair making.

In January 2016 at Maison et Objet, Paris, ercol presented the two-seater Marino Sofa to complement the existing Marino Chair.

Dylan Freeth commented, The judging panel rigorously examined the design and manufacture of Marino, so the award of the Guild Mark is a very welcome acknowledgement of the hard work put in by all of the team here at ercol.”

Marino living set

For the London Design Festival 2015, ercol launched its collaboration with the Japanese architect and designer Tomoko Azumi. Flow is an elegant chair made from beautiful steam-bent beech with a curvaceous form. The high level of craftsmanship, is evident through the refined sweeping lines, tapered seat and the ergonomic stacking function that allows space-saving thereby creating a stunning addition to ercol’s portfolio.

Tomoko chair

Tomoko Azumi said of her award, “I am very glad to receive the award in recognition of my long term collaboration with ercol, and this acknowledgement of British design excellence. I would like to celebrate this together with ercol’s technical staff, as the achievement would not have been possible without them.”

Alexander Gifford, Chairman of the Design Guild Mark, said, “Chairing the judging process, for the second year, was a great honour, and watching the great minds in our industry critique the great output of British design was a real pleasure.”
