Amy Vinn was awarded Young Designer of the Year, sponsored by the Cabinet Maker, at this year’s Interiors Birmingham Show for her witty upholstery range Allsorts.  I think you can guess what inspired this!  As part of her prize for winning this award we invited Amy to spend a fortnight with ercol’s design team.

Here Amy tells us about her thoughts on winning the award and on her time at ercol.

“At Interiors Birmingham I was completely shocked to be told I had won ‘The Cabinet Maker’ Young Designer of the year for the softAmy with Edward Tadros 229 furnishings category with my piece ‘It Takes Allsorts’. I knew that the judges were very prestigious and couldn’t believe they had chosen me! I had no idea there was a prize, I was just happy to be called a winner! When Edward Tadros was introduced to me and I found out that I would get to spend two weeks working at ercol, I was even happier!

I was so nervous when I arrived on Monday morning. Once I was here I got straight into it and now since I’ve been here I’ve designed a Birthday plaque to be presented to ‘Furniture Village’ on their 20th Birthday (it was great to see it come to life on the CNC machine), helped design the latest ad, to be unveiled during the London Design Festival & am even getting to work on my own ideas for their latest brief.

It’s a great chance for me to look at design in a different way and I’ve learnt how the finest of lines can make a design, an iconic design.  I’ve had such an insight into every aspect, from advertising, to drawing, to learning new computer programmes through to prototypes, manufacturing and the brilliant canteen!

I can’t wait to keep designing and hopefully I understand the world of furniture just a little bit more.

Thanks ercol!”

We wish Amy all the best with her career.  Amy said she aims to make people smile and enjoy the furniture around them, something we think she certainly achieved with her “It Takes Allsorts” range.
