We are really excited that ercol has been selected by iconic design magazine Wallpaper* as their partner for what looks like being one of the highlight installations of the London Design Festival, a modern day reinterpretation of the chair arch, to be shown at the V&A museum.

The London Design Festival takes place in September over a number of locations throughout London.  Its chairman, Sir John Sorrell, describes it:

“The London Design Festival is a spectacular celebration of world-class talent across the city, shining a bright light on the amazing creative people that make London the design capital of the world. The Festival reflects the growing worldwide recognition of the power of design to change things for the better, to help deliver economic prosperity and to improve quality of life. Whether you want to be inspired, informed, talk business or just soak up the atmosphere, there is something for you to see and do.”

Since design has always been at the heart of ercol we are delighted to be taking part in a number of events at this year’s show.  Prime amongst these will be the Wallpaper* and ercol chair arch.

Wallpaper* took the Victorian idea of the chair arch – a monumental arch of chairs that was erected as a celebration of the local High Wycombe chair making industry for a number of visits by dignitaries’, including Queen Victoria – and gave it a modern makeover.  They commissioned Italian designer Martino Gamper who created a vision of two overlapping arches, comprised of ercol’s iconic stacking chair.  This monumental installation will be five metres high and over twelve metres across.  It will be located at the heart of this year’s London Design Festival, in the central courtyard of the V&A museum, the John Madjeski garden, from September 19th to 27th.  We hope you will be able to pay it a visit.

Over the next few months we will keep you up to date with progress of the arch, and with more about the background of the arch and its designer.  You’ll have to excuse us if we get a little too excited in the process!
