Designjunction, part to the London Design Festival, is holding a fundraising event for cancer charity Maggie’s.  Designjunction have invited those in the design industry to donate and customise a domestic product in response to the title “Joy of Living”.  Maggie’s co-founder, Maggie Keswick Jencks, once wrote: “Above all what matters is not to lose the joy of living in the fear of dying.”  The resulting bespoke designs will be on show during the Festival – a small selection will be auctioned live during the private preview evening on Wednesday 19th September, with the remaining items going on sale at a fixed price during the exhibiton.  All the proceeds will go directly to Maggies.

ercol have made a pair of special butterfly chairs, with the legs and lists painted in a bright red.  Ercol’s chairman, Edward Tadros, describes the chairs: “We have made the back and seat in a natural finish, which shows the beauty of the grain and colour of the elm, whilst the legs and back supports are in bright red.  Red for us being the colour of Life; the joy of being Alive!”

Maggie Keswick Jencks developed cancer in 1993.  She felt that a well designed centre would help patients in their recovery and began work on the first Maggie’s centre in Edinburgh.  Today there are 15 centres across the UK providing a warm, welcoming and pleasant environment where sufferers and their families can take time out, meet others in a similar situation and receive help, advice and support.

If you’re note able to attend Designjunction, but fancy one of the many wonderful pieces available, fear not, the items will be available to purchase online from the designjunction site from Thursday 20th September at 9am.
