A year ago textile designer Donna Wilson made a special version of the ercol studio couch for us, with knitted woollen cushion covers and using the lists of the chair arms like giant knitting needles to weave a woollen decorative effect.  This September sees her take this concept a step further with woven versions of our windsor chair, stacking chair and love seat, as well as a new interpretation of the studio couch.

The pieces are on display at ercol’s design-lead stockist in Brussels, la Fabrika, as part of  “Design September”. la Fabrika has teamed up with ercol and SCP to mount a show called “A British Design Story.” For images of all the pieces visit our Flickr site using the link below.

Donna Wilson  funded her company in 2003 after making her now iconic “odd creatures” – a collection of, “odd”, knitted creatures for her final show at the Royal College of Art.  Her studio now produces a wide range of textiles and associated products sold around the world.

In Donna Wilson’s own words about making the ercol pieces:

“ I really enjoyed the process of winding and wrapping these pieces, using various shades of yarn graduating through colour pallets. I love the contrast between the pale natural wood and the tactile wool, both natural materials, which through the wrapping techniques complement each other perfectly. The wool adds a softness and an element of craft with references to basket weaving and knitting to these pieces which are part of Ercol’s originals range “
