romana-awardWe are delighted to announce that we have been awarded The Design Guild Mark Award for the Romana large sideboard.

An award for excellence in British Furniture Design was introduced by ‘The Furniture Makers Company’ to reward excellence in the design of furniture. It marks and rewards the work of the finest designers working in Britain and the best of British designers working abroad.

The Romana sideboard embodies the quality, design and craftsmanship which have become synonymous with the ercol brand.   The large sideboard provides lots of storage space, housing three drawers and two cupboard spaces while it’s defining characteristic of the Romana sideboards are the soft organic curves used along the top and legs of the piece. The large Romana sideboard designed by Dylan Freeth of the ercol Design Studio is made from oak, and finished in a clear matt lacquer.

Dylan said: “It was fantastic to receive the Design Guild Mark for Romana. Many well-designed and well-made products have received the award so I’m delighted Romana is now included on that list. The range was developed closely for our factory with the design and production team at ercol – a lot of people here have worked hard on the project, so it was great to hear that the judging panel of industry experts thought we had done a good job!

The brief was for a modern dining range which showed off ercol’s skill in working solid wood. We knew we wanted it to be a tactile range – watching people in our showroom you notice how important the physical feel of the furniture is – so I spent a lot of time initially working out how to get a soft feel to the tables and cabinets, but still keep it looking crisp and defined. Once we had settled on the rounded bullet-nose shape of the table surfaces and cabinet tops, and how the ends of tables and cabinets joint precisely around this, we applied those simple flowing lines and cuts to everything in the range.”Romana Range Spread + 2643 Chairs + 2644 Chair
