With this year seeing the 60th anniversary of the Festival of Britain, Sandersons have issued a collection of bold prints, wallpapers and fabrics – their 50’s Collection.  The Festival of Britain took place in 1951, a tough post-war era, where people had laboured under rationing and utility designs.   The Festival helped lead the way to a fresh contemporary look.  This was embodied by ercol’s new Windsor range, exhibited at the Festival of Britain.  With fabrics, out went the drab and in came bright, bold colours, with the dramatic scientific developments of the day – atomic power and the discovery of the structure of DNA – inspiring designs.

Sanderson’s 50’s Collection combines original 1950s design from their archive, with patterns from contemporary artists who’ve taken inspiration from this era.  You won’t be surprised that they have used ercol furniture to showcase these fabrics and we decided to return the favour – the blog image is of our studio couch in Sanderson’s Mobiles – Yellow/Red  fabric from their 50’s Collection.  This striking fabric is also available in a Pillar Box Red/Black, a Citrus/Black, a Blue/Lime and a Black/Lemon combination.
