Sit down – a common plea from parents to their children, this is the name of a new exhibition at the V&A Museum of Childhood. The show features seating for children through the last four centuries, from school chairs to highchairs, saddles to potties, armchairs to swings.
The exhibition takes inspiration from the Three Bears, with visitors entering through three different sized doors into the Three Bears’ cottage. Visitors can vote for their favourite chair by placing spoons in porridge bowls.
ercol are delighted to be supporting this exhibition. We have worked with Furniture Design & Technology students from Bucks New University on a brief to develop a functional and original child’s school chair for the show. The brief aims to provide the students with an insight into the many areas that need to be considered in designing a child’s seat and illustrate this process to visitors.
The Wallpaper ercol chair arch, first installed last September at the V&A as part of the London Design Festival, will be erected at the Museum of Childhood for this show. Designed by Martino Gamper, the chair arch is made from 112 ercol stacking chairs in various colours and forms two overlapping arches.
“Sit Down: Seating for Kids” is on from 6th February until 5th September at the V&A Museum of Childhood, Cambridge Heath Road, London, E2 9PA. Open daily 10am – 5:45pm.
