‘Young Furniture Makers exhibition’ awards

by ercol on October 16, 2014

Untitled-1‘Young Furniture Makers’ is dedicated to students and young professionals who have one thing in common – they are passionate about furniture and furnishing!  The Furniture Makers’ Company set up the group to help young, up and coming furniture makers and designers build a network with others in the same field, and to help them on the path to forming a successful career within the industry.  Currently there are around 300 in the group. Last week ercol participated in the annual ‘Young Furniture Makers exhibition’ organised by the furnishing industry’s charity, The Furniture Makers’ Company.

The annual event showcased exhibits from students at all levels, from FDA to BA to MA, and from the numerous colleges and universities the Company supports, including Birmingham City university, Bucks New University, Burnley College De Montfort University, Edward Barnsley Workshop, Leeds College of Art and Design, London Met, Plymouth University, Rycotewood and Warwickshire College.

Also on show was work from the winner of the Proskills/MakeIT competition for schools, as well as projects by secondary schoolchildren as part of the Design Book Scheme.

Awards from numerous industry partnerships where companies Burbidge, Hands, Gordon Russell, Crofts & Assinder, Willis & Gambier and KI Europe and ourselves worked with university students on specific projects.

Monica Prieto from Bucks New University who won the ercol competition also attended the awards. You can see her award winning design on our previous blog post here.

Four students Simon Attard, Panaz, Kelly Baker, Axminster Tools & Machinery, Thomas Winfield, Blum, and our own Manon Martel were all selected earlier in the year to undertake an intensive three week programme for Student Industry Experience which saw them visiting 17 companies within the UK furniture industry. A staggering total of 32 hours travelling was required in order for the candidates to attend days at the likes of Marks and Spencer’s, DFS, the Cabinet Maker office and including the ercol office and factory.

Manon (second from the right) said ‘This was a great course, I learnt a lot about the industry of which I hope to be able bring back to ercol.’

Congratulations to all of the students who won their awards!
